John M. Rainey, M.D.

Dr. Rainey, the founding member of Louisiana Oncology Associates (LOA), is originally from Alexandria, Louisiana, and has been in practice in Lafayette since 1978. He earned his BS from Louisiana State University in 1970. He attended medical school at Louisiana State University in New Orleans, graduating in 1973. He completed his residency at Lafayette Charity Hospital in Lafayette in 1976, then completed his fellowship in Oncology at the University of Arizona in 1978. Dr. Rainey is board certified in Medical Oncology and Internal Medicine. He is a Fellow of the AmericanCollege of Physicians. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, AmericanMedical Association, Southern Medical Association, Louisiana Oncology Society, Louisiana State Medical Society, Lafayette Parish Medical Society, and the American College of Physician Executives. He is on the Board of Directors of The National Coalition of Cancer Surviorship.

J. Eugene "Gene" Brierre, M.D.

Dr. Brierre joined LOA in 1993. He grew up in Lafayette, graduating from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1983 with a BS in Biology/Chemistry. He attended medical school at Louisiana State University Medical Center in Shreveport, graduating in 1987. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Oncology at the University of Alabama, finishing in 1993. Dr. Brierre is board certified in Medical Oncology and Internal Medicine. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, American College of Physicians, Louisiana State Medical Society, Lafayette Parish Medical Society, and the Louisiana Oncology Society.

David A. Rinaldi, M.D.

Dr. Rinaldi joined LOA in 1996. He is a native of Rhode Island and received his BS in Biology from Providence College in 1982. He attended medical school at the University of Vermont, graduating in 1986. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and a combined Hematology /Oncology fellowship at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, finishing in 1993. He spent 1993-1996 as a research fellow in the Investigational Drug Development Program at Brooke. Dr. Rinaldi is board certified in Medical Oncology, Hematology, and Internal Medicine. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American College of Physicians, the American Medical Association, the Louisiana Oncology Society, the Southern Oncology Association, the Louisiana State Medical Society, the Lafayette Parish Medical Society, and Iberia Parish Medical Society.

James L. Cole, M.D.

Dr. Cole joined LOA in 1997. He grew up in Lafayette, graduating from Louisiana State University with a BA in History in 1987. He attended medical school at Louisiana State University Medical Center in Shreveport, graduating in 1991. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and a combined fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, finishing in 1997. Dr. Cole is board certified in Medical Oncology, Hematology, and Internal Medicine. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology, the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, the Louisiana Oncology Society, the Southern Oncology Association, Louisiana State Medical Society, Lafayette Parish Medical Society, and the American College of Physician Executives.

Karen Roden, M.D.

Dr. Roden joined LOA in 2001. She is a native of Kentucky and she received her BS in Biochemistry from David Lipscomb College. She attended medical school at Vanderbilt School of Medicine in Nashville. She served in the U.S. Army and completed her residency and fellowship in Oncology/hematology at Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston in Texas. Dr. Roden is board certified in Medical Oncology, Hematology, and Internal Medicine. She is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, the Louisiana Oncology Society, the Louisiana State Medical Association, and the Lafayette Parish Medical Society.

Physicians Assistants/Nurse Practitioners

Felicia Case and Eric Buller are our two certified Physician's Assistants. While mainly assisting in seeing patients, they both are also integrally involved in ongoing research studies. Tracy P. Broussard BSN, MSN, CFNP, AOCNP is certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a Family Nurse Practitioner and by the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation as an Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner. She works with Dr. Roden in both our Crowley and Lafayette clinics. Tracy trained at the University of Southwestern Lousiana, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and Southern University. Nursing Staff

LOA is proud to have a team of registered nurses who all have extensive experience in administering chemotherapy. All are ONS certified or working toward certification. They are knowledgeable of both the medications being administered as well as the disease process being treated. They are also available to answer questions over the telephone. Medical Assistants

All of our medical assistants are certified and licensed in phlebotomy, EKG, and Medical Assisting. They help evaluate patients and draw lab samples. They also help with injections.

Dietician

LOA has a licensed dietician on staff to help cancer patients with dietary needs. The dietician can assist patients with nutrition counseling before starting chemotherapy, during and after chemotherapy. The dietician is also able to help with special diets to help with symptom management, weight loss/gain as well as counseling on other specific health conditions such as diabetes and anemia.

Valerie Miniex, LD is available on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday to provide counseling and education on any nutritional concerns a patient may have. She can be reached at 235-7898, ext 402.
